Wigwam Builder

Designed for 20 minute guided programs, this 2'x2' wigwam model can be assembled from replica ash saplings, birch bark, and twine, all supported by a 4" tall sculpted base within a maple box. 

By working closely with the museum staff and cultural consultants, we made this model exacting in relevant detail. It is based on the Wigwam constructed at Strawbery Banke Museum in 2021. Mud is piled in rings around each hole, a nod to the discolored rings of soil found in an excavation in 2015, which indicate that a wigwam had once been built in that location. A compass shows East is in the direction of the slightly larger gap between holes, signalling that this will be the entrance to the home.  The trees are painted to resemble Ash saplings, the wood often used for this purpose. These details and more contribute to an authentic  and educational piece. 

The saplings are made of PEX pipe with embedded wire, to provide flexibility without compromising strength. The birch bark panels are printed fabric, sewn with an interior stiffening layer to provide realistic rigidity and durability. Every piece is made with the highest standard of durability, while the very small pieces such as the "twine" are also easily replacable in case they go missing.
