Cosmic Canvas

Visit the Star Wall page for more information, photos, and videos!

This wall-mounted exhibit uses photo-sensitive material over a backlit panel to create a night sky scene that visitors can add their own flair to. Using tethered flashlights, visitors can draw in disappearing strokes across the starry canvas - aliens, planets, constellations, northern lights! What could be out there in the cosmos?

This exhibit blends science and art, displaying real constellations across a wall, but leaving it up to the visitor to find the story behind it. The awe of watching the flashlight leave a bright brushstroke behind the hand of the drawer is soon replaced with rapid experimentation with the medium: What happens if I draw fast, slow, stay in one spot, or tilt the flashlight? How big can I make my picture? What can I draw to make my friend laugh?

As the light fades, visitors get endless opportunity to draw on top of their old artwork, playing and iterating with new creative ideas about what might be waiting for us at the edges of the universe. When they're done, the surface is blank within minutes and ready for the next group. With seamless reset, a smooth and easy-to-clean face, and kid-friendly flashlights, this exhibit is a dazzling cosmic addition to your dark exhibit space.
